James Cameron Avatar

1. Avatar is set in 2154 on Pandora, a moon in the Alpha Centauri system. The Na’vi, the local tribe, are threatened by the human colonists’ plans to expand their mining project. The Avatars which give the film its name are the human-Na’vi hybrid bodies grown to allow the colonists to move around in the planet’s toxic atmosphere, which are controlled through the mind.

2. Director James Cameron first wrote a script for the film in 1994. Plans to film it for a 1999 release were cancelled as he did not believe technology had yet reached the capacity to portray his vision.

3. The portrayals of computer-generated characters Gollum in the Lord of the Rings series, King Kong and The Pirates of the < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Caribbean’s Davy Jones convinced Cameron the technology had arrived to bring his film to life. The Na’vi characters, 10ft tall blue humanoids, were created using motion capture. CGI (computer-generated images) form 60 per cent of the film.

4. New software and stereoscopic cameras were developed to allow the film to be produced in 3D as well as a standard edit.

5.  Avatar is the first film to gross more than $2billion at the cinema box office. Its record takings mean director Cameron has the two biggest grossing films in history, as he was also behind previous record holder Titanic.
